An Overview of Sinus Headache
Treatment
A sinus headache is by definition a headache caused by pressure
in your sinus cavities. This pressure is usually the result of
excess mucus buildup either from allergies or a cold.
Sometimes, sinus headaches can also be caused by changes in air
pressure, which would happen by climbing a mountain or if a
storm was eminent. A sinus headache is a secondary headache
because it is caused by another problem. If you treat the
underlying problem, the headache should go away.
Quite often, a migraine can be misdiagnosed as a sinus
headache. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between the
two, and several tests may have to be used to determine which
type of headache you actually have.
A Few Ways to Treat a Sinus Headache
Since a sinus headache is a secondary headache, a sinus
headache treatment should take into consideration the
underlying cause of the pain and treat that. If there is a
sinus infection, antibiotics may be prescribed to begin a sinus
headache treatment.
Humidifiers and decongestants may also be used to relieve the
pressure. If a more drastic sinus headache treatment becomes
necessary, the sinuses can be surgically drained, but that is
not at all a common approach, and is usually only used if there
are deformities in the structure of the sinus
cavities.
Non-traditional approaches to sinus headache treatment include
relaxation techniques, acupuncture and homeopathic approaches.
Herbal remedies abound as well for a sinus headache treatment.
Barberry, goldenseal, echinacea, feverfew, skullcap and devil’s
claw have all traditionally been used for a sinus headache
treatment, usually with mixed results.
Acupuncture has actually been a quite successful sinus headache
treatment for many. Acupuncturists, in addition to the needles
they use, may also use an herbal remedy involving the herb
mugwort.
If you are having problems with sinus headaches, or if you
aren’t sure if that’s what they really are, consult your
doctor. They should be able to determine if it is in fact a
sinus headache and prescribe a sinus headache treatment. For
those who don’t particularly care for a traditional doctor’s
approach, you can research alternative therapies and consult an
acupuncturist.
Headaches can be a curse, but hopefully with enough research
and looking for a good sinus headache treatment, you will find
one that will help your particular situation. It’s pretty safe
to say that everyone will have a slightly different type of
headache, and each diagnosis and sinus headache treatment will
need to be customized to the patient.
